Aden Governorate, Administrative division in southern Yemen
The Aden Governorate extends over 1,114 square kilometers along the Arabian Sea coast, featuring eight distinct districts and numerous sub-districts.
From 1839 to 1967, the region remained under British administration before becoming the capital territory of South Yemen until the 1990 unification.
The administrative structure of Aden Governorate reflects traditional Yemeni governance systems through multiple tiers of districts, sub-districts, and village organizations.
The governorate contains extensive port facilities that manage maritime commerce between Asia and Europe through the Gulf of Aden.
In 2004, the governorate transferred control of the Socotra archipelago to the neighboring Hadhramaut region, modifying its territorial composition.
