Great Mosque of Sana'a

The Great Mosque of Sana'a extends across 4,800 square meters within the Old City, featuring two minarets and a central courtyard measuring 80 by 60 meters.

Built in 630 AD during the early Islamic period, the mosque incorporates materials from the former Himyarite Ghumdan Palace and Axumite Christian Church of al-Qalis.

The mosque serves as the principal religious center in Sana'a, where residents gather for daily prayers, educational activities, and community gatherings throughout the year.

The administration provides guided tours of the complex, explaining its architectural elements, including the stepped stone columns, carved wooden ceilings, and 16th-century domed treasury.

Archaeological excavations in the 1970s uncovered numerous manuscripts, including fragments of early Qurans that contribute to understanding Islamic educational practices.
