Old Stordal Church

Old Stordal Church is an octagonal wooden structure painted white, with detailed rosemaling paintings that decorate its walls and ceilings. The interior space combines handcrafted artistry with religious elements throughout its entire hall.

The building was erected in 1789 and incorporated elements from a previous structure dating to the 14th century that had occupied the same location. A priest oversaw the construction and sought to maintain the continuity of faith at this sacred site.

Biblical scenes and religious figures painted across the walls and ceilings showcase the artistic traditions of local craftsmen. These decorations reveal how faith and daily creativity were woven together in the community's religious life.

The building stands in a rural location northwest of Valldal and operates today as a museum managed by a preservation society. Visitors should check locally since access follows the seasons and opening hours vary.

The building preserves a baptismal font from the original 13th-century structure along with an ancient crucifix. These artifacts connect centuries of prayers and faith at a single sacred location.
