Médio Tejo Subregion

Médio Tejo is an administrative region in central Portugal made up of eleven municipalities, with Tomar serving as its administrative center. The area stretches across river valleys and plateaus, with the Tagus River defining much of its natural character.

The region was established in 2008, replacing the former Comunidade Urbana do Médio Tejo and combining territories from Santarém and Castelo Branco districts. This reorganization brought neighboring municipalities together under a new administrative structure.

Each town and village maintains its own local traditions that show through regional dishes and community celebrations. Walking through different areas, you can find handmade crafts and food specialties that connect to the river valley's heritage.

The region connects well to major Portuguese cities through highways and rail networks, making it accessible by multiple transport methods. Exploring the different municipalities by car or train helps you see the varied landscapes and towns without rushing between them.

The region maintains a low population density that balances urban centers with open landscapes and farmland. This pattern preserves large natural areas where rural life continues alongside the few growing towns.
