Foz do Douro

Foz do Douro is a coastal district at the Douro River mouth featuring granite outcrops and small sandy beaches including Praia dos Ingleses and Praia do Carneiro. The shoreline alternates between rocky formations and sheltered bathing areas throughout the district.

The Fortaleza de São João da Foz was constructed in the 16th century and stands at the river mouth as evidence of Porto's maritime defense network. The fortress served as a protective barrier against coastal threats to the city's shipping interests.

The Pérgola da Foz from the 1930s functions as a gathering place where residents spend their evenings walking and socializing by the water. The site reveals how locals integrate the riverside into their daily rhythm and community life.

Visitors can reach the district via the historic Line 1 tram or bus 500, both offering regular connections to central Porto with no long waits between services. These options make it easy to plan a flexible day exploring the waterfront and surrounding neighborhoods.

The Farol de Felgueiras lighthouse was built in 1886 from granite blocks and extends into the Atlantic along a long stone pathway leading directly from shore. Few visitors notice this offshore structure while focusing on the more visible beach areas nearby.
