Boca do Rio beach

Boca do Rio is a beach along the Atlantic coast in Vila do Bispo with sandy areas and rock formations at the water's edge. High cliffs frame the shoreline from behind, creating a distinctive backdrop.

The area shows traces of human settlement over long periods, with Roman ruins nearby and remains of a 19th-century fish canning factory. These archaeological finds document the economic and cultural importance of the site across different periods.

The name Boca do Rio means 'river mouth' because the Ribeira de Budens river flows into the Atlantic Ocean at this point. The meeting of river and sea shapes the character of this stretch of coast.

There is a parking area behind the beach where visitors can leave their vehicles. The water is clean and suitable for swimming, but there are no lifeguards on site.

A French naval vessel from 1759 lies submerged near the beach, attracting diving enthusiasts who want to explore historical artifacts. The shipwreck stands as a reminder of an important maritime chapter in this coastal area's past.
