Praia da Figueira, Coastal beach near Salema, Portugal

Praia da Figueira is a sandy beach along the Atlantic coast of Portugal, bordered by limestone cliffs and Mediterranean plants including fig and olive trees. The shore features a narrow cove formation sheltered by steep rocky walls that define its character.

The eastern cliff contains remnants of a military fortification from the 17th century that monitored maritime activity along the Portuguese coast. This defensive structure reflects the region's historical importance in protecting against sea-based threats.

The western section serves as a designated naturist area, reflecting long-standing Portuguese coastal practices. This use shows how locals and visitors have adapted the beach to different preferences over time.

The beach is located about 800 meters (0.5 miles) from the parking area and requires a 10-minute walk along a narrow footpath to reach it. Wear comfortable shoes for the path, and check tidal conditions since high water can make access challenging.

The water remains clear during summer months, making it good for snorkeling and observing underwater life. This clarity comes from the cove's sheltered position and natural filtering by the rocky formations.

Algarve in photos: golden beaches, limestone cliffs, and sea caves of southern Portugal

The Algarve offers some of Portugal's most scenic landscapes, with a coastline alternating between golden beaches, ochre limestone cliffs, and rock formations shaped by marine erosion. This collection features the area's most notable sites, from the sea caves of Benagil to the natural arches of Ponta da Piedade, and the expansive areas of Ria Formosa, a protected wetland spanning 37 miles (60 kilometers) along the coast. Beyond the coastline, the Algarve also boasts a notable historical heritage, including the medieval Silves Castle built from red sandstone and the white alleys of the old town of Albufeira. Beaches such as Praia da Marinha and Praia do Amado attract photographers as well as surfers, while coastal villages like Cacela Velha maintain an authentic ambiance. These locations are particularly suitable for photography due to their contrasting colors and Mediterranean light.
