The building is made up of several wings arranged around formal gardens, with high ceilings, stone floors, and large windows overlooking the water.
The palace was built in the early 18th century for a wealthy Portuguese family, during a period when Porto grew rich from wine trade along the Douro. Over the following centuries it changed hands several times and served different purposes before being converted into a hotel, with its original structure kept intact.
Some walls inside carry hand-painted azulejo tiles, a tradition deeply rooted in northern Portuguese decorative arts that visitors can admire up close. Walking through the rooms, the interplay between old ornamental details and modern furnishings gives a clear sense of how the building is used today.
