Palácio do Freixo, Baroque palace in Campanhã, Porto, Portugal
Palácio do Freixo is a three-story Baroque palace in Porto with decorated facades, balconies, and ornate staircases positioned to face the Douro River. The rectangular structure displays classical architectural features from the 1700s and now serves as a luxury hotel.
The palace was designed by architect Nicolau Nasoni in the mid-1700s for Canon Jerónimo de Távora. It later passed to industrialist António Afonso Velado in 1850, marking a shift from a residence to a property tied to economic enterprise.
The interior preserves mural paintings from the 1700s framed by ornamental moldings that reflect artistic tastes of wealthy Portuguese households. These decorations show the craftsmanship valued in the homes of the nobility and clergy.
The building operates as a luxury hotel and is accessible to guests while maintaining its National Monument status. Visitors should know that as an active hotel, access may be limited to hotel guests or organized tours.
Next to the palace stand buildings from a former soap factory and mill with a tall chimney, creating a striking contrast to the Baroque architecture. These industrial structures remind visitors of the economic activity that shaped the area in earlier times.
