Moscow Kremlin Wall

The Moscow Kremlin Wall is a massive red brick fortification that extends roughly 2 km around the historic citadel, forming a protective boundary. The structure features Gothic-style crenellations and is interrupted by watchtowers positioned at regular intervals along its length.

Construction of the present wall began in the mid-15th century, replacing earlier white stone fortifications that proved less resilient. The new structure was built to better protect the citadel against external threats and established the distinctive red brick appearance seen today.

The wall shapes the Kremlin's identity through its distinctive red brick color and crenellated profile visible from every angle around the compound. Visitors walking around the perimeter experience this fortification as a defining visual boundary between the historic center and the modern city beyond.
