Kagul Obelisk

The Kagul Obelisk is a memorial built from dark grey and red Russian marble with carefully balanced proportions positioned near the southern side of Catherine Palace. The structure rises on a stone base inscribed with details about the events it commemorates.

The obelisk was erected following a major military engagement between Russian forces and the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. Catherine II commissioned such memorials as expressions of her authority and to commemorate victories achieved during her reign.
