Monument to Alexander Lanskoy in Tsarskoe Selo, Monument in Catherine Park of Tsarskoe Selo, Russia
The Monument to Alexander Lanskoy is a memorial structure in Catherine Park featuring a white marble base topped with a vase and a flame-like pinnacle. Classical bas-reliefs carved on three sides of the pedestal depict symbols of virtue including laurel wreaths, shields with spears, and cornucopias.
Erected in 1785, the monument honors Alexander Lanskoy who held a position of favor with Catherine the Great starting in 1780. His sudden death from diphtheria in 1784 prompted the creation of this memorial within the imperial park.
The marble carvings display symbols of virtue and honor that reflect how imperial Russia valued loyalty and service. Walking around the monument, you notice these classical images were meant to celebrate a person of importance to Catherine the Great.
The monument sits on a green hill within the landscape section of the park, accessible via the main pathways through the grounds. The open setting allows you to view the structure clearly from different angles as you approach.
The structure originally displayed a bronze plaque bearing Lanskoy's coat of arms, but this was removed by imperial order in 1830. This change reflects how the imperial family later preferred to distance itself from such personal connections.
