SoFo, Creative neighborhood in Södermalm district, Stockholm, Sweden
SoFo spans seven city blocks south of Folkungagatan street, filled with independent fashion boutiques, vintage shops, organic cafes, pottery studios, and art galleries. The neighborhood is defined by locally owned businesses rather than chain stores, creating a mix of retail and creative spaces.
Local entrepreneurs created this neighborhood in 2003, naming it SoFo to reference similar creative districts in London and Manhattan. The choice of name reflected their goal to establish a hub for Swedish design and innovation.
The area draws artists, designers, and small business owners who run galleries, shops, and studios, creating a hub where you can see Swedish creativity in action. Walking through the district, you notice how independent retailers shape the visual character of every street corner.
Medborgarplatsen metro station provides direct access to the area, situated just four stops from Central Station. Most shops operate between 11:00 and 18:00 daily, though many cafes open earlier in the morning for breakfast.
On the last Thursday of each month, SoFo Night extends shop hours until 21:00 with live music and special retail events. This monthly occasion brings extra energy to the streets and turns shopping into a social gathering for locals and visitors alike.
