Sninský kameň, Mountain summit in Eastern Slovakia.
Sninský kameň is a summit in the Vihorlat hills of eastern Slovakia, close to the town of Snina. A rocky outcrop marks its highest point, and the surrounding area is covered in dense forest that gives way to open views at the top.
The Vihorlat hills, where this summit stands, were shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago, which explains the rocky formations at the top. The area around Snina passed through the hands of several kingdoms and empires before becoming part of modern Slovakia in the 20th century.
The name Sninský kameň means roughly "the stone of Snina," referring to the nearby town and the rocky outcrop at the top that gives the hill its character. From the summit, visitors can see the wide Vihorlat hills stretching in every direction, a view that locals have used as a reference point for generations.
The summit is reached by marked hiking trails starting from the Snina area, and the terrain gets steeper closer to the top. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the rocky ground near the peak can be slippery, especially after rain.
Although the summit is not particularly high, its position above the surrounding forest makes it one of the better viewpoints in the Vihorlat range. On a clear day, the view is said to reach as far as the Ukrainian Carpathians across the border.
