Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, National park in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Doi Pha Hom Pok is a national park covering mountain terrain in northern Thailand with tropical forests, mixed woodlands, and highland areas at higher elevations. The landscape features steep slopes covered in vegetation and multiple trails that pass through different zones.
The park was established in 2000 as a protected nature reserve to safeguard the mountain forests and communities within them. This action helped preserve large forest areas in the north from increased development.
Karen and other hill tribe communities live throughout the park and use the forests as they have done for generations. You encounter their traditional practices naturally as you move through inhabited areas of the park.
Access roads can be difficult especially during the rainy season, so visitors should arrive with a sturdy vehicle or plan ahead. Camping facilities are spread throughout the park but offer basic conditions and require some preparation beforehand.
Near the park headquarters lie natural hot springs that release dramatic plumes of steam, with water temperatures hot enough to boil. These geothermal features are uncommon in the region and attract visitors who want to witness raw geological activity.
