Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, National park in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park is a protected area in the mountains of northern Chiang Mai, covering tropical forests, mixed woodlands, and highland zones. It contains Doi Pha Hom Pok peak, the second highest summit in Thailand, surrounded by steep forested slopes and a network of hiking trails.
The park was established in 2000 to protect the mountain forests of northern Thailand from growing pressure from logging and land clearing. Before that, parts of this highland area had already been affected by deforestation.
Karen and other hill tribe communities have lived in this area for generations, and their presence is easy to notice in the villages scattered across the highlands. Traditional farming, weaving, and local dress are part of everyday life in the inhabited zones of the park.
The roads into the park can become difficult to drive during the rainy season, so a vehicle with good clearance is advisable. Camping areas are available inside the park but offer basic facilities, so visitors should come prepared with their own supplies.
Near the park headquarters, natural hot springs reach temperatures hot enough to cook eggs, and local vendors actually do this to sell boiled eggs to visitors on the spot. This small roadside scene is one of the more unexpected things you encounter in this part of northern Thailand.
