Phayao, Northern administrative province in Thailand
Phayao is an administrative division in northern Thailand crossed by forested mountain ranges and containing several protected areas. The region divides into nine smaller administrative units spread between valleys and uplands.
A city-state arose here in the late 11th century and later joined with neighboring kingdoms. In the late 1970s the area gained its current administrative status.
The name comes from an old kingdom that stood here for over eight centuries before merging into larger realms. Today this past shows in temples, festivals, and the way locals maintain their traditions.
The nine districts lie along several main roads that wind through the mountains and connect to other northern Thai regions. Maps and local knowledge help visitors navigate the sprawling terrain.
A large freshwater lake marks the center of the region and has provided a livelihood for fishermen for generations. The body of water also attracts a rare catfish species that ranks among the largest freshwater fish in the world.
