Mueang Phayao, Administrative district in Phayao, Thailand
Mueang Phayao is an administrative district in Phayao Province in northern Thailand, situated at approximately 390 meters elevation. The area comprises fifteen subdistricts including settlements such as Wiang, Mae Tam, and Mae Na Ruea.
The territory was established in 1095 by Phokhun Si Chom Tham of the Lua Changkharat Dynasty. Over time the name changed from the original Phu Kamyao to its current form.
Temples like Wat Analayo Thipphayaram and Wat Phra That Chom Thong stand as gathering places where locals practice their faith through daily rituals and seasonal celebrations. These religious sites shape how the community marks important moments and connects with its northern Lanna traditions.
Direct buses run from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal, and flights to nearby Chiang Rai offer another route followed by local transportation options. Travel works year-round, though the cooler and drier months from November to February are most comfortable.
Kwan Phayao is a large freshwater reservoir that sustains agriculture throughout the area and provides livelihoods for local fishing communities. The water body shapes both the landscape and daily economic activities.
