Gryneion, Archaeological site near Aliağa, Turkey
Gryneion was an ancient city located on a peninsula above Çandarlı Bay in what is now Turkey's Izmir Province. The remains visible today include sections of walls, broken columns, and residential quarters that reveal how people organized their living spaces in this coastal settlement.
The settlement developed in ancient times and later became part of a major maritime alliance that connected coastal cities. Its importance grew as the region's political situation changed over the centuries.
The Temple of Apollo at Gryneion held regional importance as a prophecy center and represented one of the principal religious structures in Western Anatolia.
The site can be reached from the nearby road network and lies just a short distance from local villages in the area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and pathways across the site are not fully developed.
Two ancient breakwaters still visible in the bay mark the location of a harbor where ships once found shelter. Scattered stone blocks nearby come from a small guardhouse that stood watch over maritime trade at this port.
