Palandöken Dam, Embankment dam in Erzurum Province, Turkey.
Palandöken Dam is a rock-fill embankment with a clay core that rises 49 meters above the Lezgi River in eastern Turkey. The reservoir stores water for managing resources across the entire region.
Construction began in 1985 under Turkish State Hydraulic Works and finished in 1988 to address regional water shortages. The project arose from the need to manage aridity in eastern Turkey.
The irrigation system connects agriculture with modern water management and shapes daily life in local communities. People in the region depend on it to maintain fertile fields and sustain life in this dry climate.
The dam is located in mountainous terrain and can be difficult to reach during winter months due to snow. It is best visited in warmer months when roads are easily accessible and water levels are clearly visible in good light.
The facility shares its location with the Palandöken ski resort, creating a rare system where winter sports and water management coexist side by side. This combination makes the place distinctive, as few dams are intertwined with winter tourism infrastructure in this way.
