Kop Mountain National Historic Park, National historic park in Bayburt Province, Turkey
Kop Mountain National Historic Park is a protected area spanning mountainous terrain at an elevation of about 2,900 meters (9,500 feet) between Bayburt and Erzurum provinces. The site includes a visitor center, museum, preserved trenches, and military artifacts from wartime.
The Third Ottoman Army successfully defended this strategic position against Russian forces from March to July 1916. This period marked a crucial turning point in the war on the Eastern Front.
A marble monument at the summit commemorates the soldiers who fought here during World War I. The place carries this memory in its physical structures and serves as a reminder of shared wartime experiences.
The terrain is mountainous and requires appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear for exploration. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and bring plenty of water.
The area hosts about 134 butterfly species, including ten found nowhere else in the world. This exceptional diversity makes it an important refuge for specialized insect populations.
