Baksi Museum, Contemporary art museum in Pazaryolu, Turkey.
Baksı Museum is an art museum in Pazaryolu, in northeastern Turkey, made up of several buildings that house exhibition spaces, workshops, a library, and a conference area. A separate structure on the grounds, known as the Warehouse Museum, displays rotating exhibitions throughout the year alongside the permanent collection.
The museum opened in 2010, founded by citizens from the region without any state funding, which was unusual for a cultural institution of this size in Turkey. Two years after opening, a second exhibition hall was added to the site to meet growing demand.
The museum hosts workshops where local women gather to weave and create textiles using traditional techniques from the region. Visitors can watch this work directly, which gives a sense of how craft is still part of everyday life here.
It is worth setting aside enough time to walk through both the main building and the Warehouse Museum, as each offers a different set of exhibitions. The museum sits in a rural setting, so arriving with your own transport or arranging a local ride in advance is a good idea.
The name Baksı comes from a Kyrgyz Turkish word for a shaman or spiritual healer, a reference that the founders chose deliberately. This choice reflects how the people behind the museum saw it as something that could restore a sense of connection to the local community.
