Eastern Anatolia Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Konaklı, Turkey.
The Eastern Anatolia Observatory is an astronomical research facility located on Karakaya Hill near Erzurum. The installation sits at an elevation of approximately 3,170 meters and operates a large reflector telescope designed for observing celestial objects and conducting infrared studies.
The facility was initiated in 2014 by Turkey's Ministry of Development together with Atatürk University as a research partnership. A Belgian manufacturer was contracted to build the main telescope and its associated technical systems.
The facility strengthens Turkey's position in astronomical research by connecting forty universities and seven regional observatories in collaborative scientific programs.
The high-altitude location allows observations with minimal air pollution and atmospheric interference for clearer results. Visitors should prepare for cold weather and thin air when exploring the facility.
The observatory sits within a ski resort area, blending research operations with recreational facilities at the same location. This unusual arrangement allows visitors to move between scientific installations and winter activities.
