Wu Sheng Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Gongliao District, Taiwan
Wu Sheng Monastery is a Buddhist monastery perched on a mountainside in Gongliao District, sitting at 380 meters in elevation with views overlooking the beach and ocean. The complex contains multiple religious buildings and artworks, including large stone sculptures and smaller shrines.
A spiritual teacher founded the monastery in 1984 after spending years in meditation retreat at this mountain location. This founding marked the beginning of a community that continues its religious practice to the present day.
The monastery serves as a center for meditation practice and Buddhist teaching, where visitors experience how spiritual principles integrate into everyday life. Retreat programs and educational sessions here welcome both beginners and experienced practitioners.
The site is accessible during most days of the week and lies near a train station, making arrival straightforward. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time since the grounds are hilly and exploring the multi-level buildings takes effort.
The main hall houses a jade sculpture with an unusual orientation rarely found at other Buddhist sites. The collection of structures is complemented by a towering bronze statue visible from the surrounding hillside.
