Pier-2 Art Center, Cultural center in Yancheng District, Taiwan
Pier-2 Art Center comprises multiple warehouses near Kaohsiung Harbor with exhibition spaces, shops, cafes, and outdoor art installations throughout the grounds. The converted structures blend indoor galleries with open public areas designed for visitors to explore at their own pace.
The warehouses were built in 1973 to store port goods but sat unused for decades until the Cultural Bureau transformed them into an arts district in 2006. This redevelopment prevented the deteriorating buildings from disappearing and gave the abandoned site a new purpose.
Local and international artists display their work in the converted warehouses, while outdoor spaces showcase large-scale murals and sculptures created specifically for this location. People come here to experience how contemporary art has become part of daily life in this former industrial zone.
The center is reachable by taking the Kaohsiung MRT to Yanchengpu Station or using the Light Rail stations at Dayi Pier-2 and Penglai Pier-2. The grounds are sprawling and best explored on foot, so wearing comfortable shoes helps you move easily between different areas.
The Hamasen Museum inside warehouses 7 and 8 houses a detailed miniature railway system depicting multiple Taiwanese cities across different historical periods. The model captures local architecture and landscapes with surprising precision and scale.
