Shevchenkivskyi raion

Shevchenkivskyi district sits on the eastern bank of the Dnieper River in Zaporizhzhia, with a large area containing mixed residential development. The space includes several named neighborhoods and smaller residential sections that together form a substantial portion of the city.

The district was created in 1962 through an administrative reorganization that separated it from the former Zhovtnevyi District. This restructuring divided the city into new administrative areas to better manage its expansion.

The district takes its name from Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's most important 19th-century poet and artist, a figure deeply meaningful to the nation's identity. This naming choice reflects how local communities connect their everyday lives to larger national heritage.
