Zaporizhzhia, Industrial city in southeastern Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia is a city along the Dnipro River in the southeastern part of Ukraine, administratively the center of the oblast bearing the same name. Khortytsia Island splits the river into two branches and forms a natural area within the urban boundaries.
A fortress was established in the late 18th century as a defensive outpost against Crimean Tatar raids. The settlement later developed into a center for heavy industry and energy production during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Local markets sell handmade textiles and traditional ceramics crafted by artisans from the region. Visitors can watch folk music performances and dance troupes appearing at city festivals and public gatherings.
The city can be reached by rail connections to other major Ukrainian cities as well as an international airport. Many areas are walkable, while public transport offers connections between different districts.
A large dam from the 1930s generates electricity and forms an artificial lake upstream from the center. The structure was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt afterward, maintaining its original function.
