Zaporizhzhia oak

Zaporizhzhia oak, Protected oak tree in Verkhnia Khortytsia, Ukraine

The Zaporizhzhia oak is an ancient tree standing in Verkhnia Khortytsia within a protected oak forest park. With a trunk circumference of around 6 meters, it is among the largest and oldest specimens in this wooded area.

This oak began growing roughly 700 years ago and survived the many transformations of the region over the centuries. In 2010 it won recognition as the National Tree of Ukraine after a nationwide selection process.

This tree serves as a living symbol of regional continuity and draws visitors who come to witness something that has endured through centuries of change. It represents a connection to the land that locals hold dear.

The tree sits within the Oak Grove Park on Khortytsia Island, which is accessible by public transport. The grounds are well-maintained with paths for exploring the surrounding wooded area.

This tree may be one of the last remnants of forests that once covered the area during medieval times. Its survival demonstrates how a single plant can outlast entire historical epochs.
