Purchase, Residential hamlet in Harrison, New York, United States
Purchase sits in Westchester County and spreads over gently rolling land with wooded areas, residential streets, and several corporate headquarters. Roads run between modern office complexes and older homes, while large green spaces and campus grounds fill the spaces in between.
John Harrison acquired the land from Native Americans in 1695, giving the area its eventual name. In the 20th century, several large corporations moved in and transformed the rural landscape into a mix of residential and business zones.
The hamlet takes its name from John Harrison's land purchase in the late 1600s, a transaction that remains part of local memory today. Two colleges bring hundreds of young people here each year, and students live around the campuses while using nearby cafés and shops in their daily routines.
Access by car is easy from I-287 and I-684, and Manhattan lies less than an hour away by road. Visitors find parking at most buildings, and the large campus grounds can be explored on foot once you arrive.
The PepsiCo headquarters hosts an extensive sculpture garden with 45 works by international artists, spread over more than 160 acres (65 hectares). The artworks stand within a landscaped setting and can be discovered along long walking paths.
