Washington State Department of Transportation, government agency in Washington (state), United States
The Washington State Department of Transportation is a government agency that manages roads, bridges, ferries, and airports throughout Washington. It oversees more than 20,000 miles of roads and operates the largest ferry system in the United States, with multiple routes crossing the Puget Sound and connecting various parts of the state.
The agency was established in 1905 as the Washington State Highway Board to plan roads connecting different parts of the state. It became part of the Department of Public Works in 1921 and was reorganized as the Department of Transportation in 1977, consolidating various transportation services under one administration.
The main office is located in Olympia and open weekdays from 8 in the morning to 5 in the evening; regional offices serve Spokane, Wenatchee, and other areas. The agency provides real-time traffic updates, road condition information, and webcam feeds so visitors can check current conditions before traveling.
The system operates some of the world's oldest floating bridges, including the first one across Lake Washington built in the 1940s. These engineering achievements influenced the design of similar structures in other places and represent a significant chapter in bridge innovation.
