Located in northeastern Oklahoma, Vinita sits at an elevation of 213 meters and serves as the administrative center of Craig County.

The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad constructed a line through Vinita in 1871, marking the beginning of significant development in the region.

The establishment of Vinita reflects the intersection of Cherokee Nation settlement and railroad expansion during the nineteenth century territorial period.

Interstate 44 and U.S. Highways 59, 60, and 69 connect through Vinita, making it an important transportation hub in northeastern Oklahoma.

The Federal Court Northern District established in Vinita in 1902 preceded Oklahoma statehood by five years, demonstrating early judicial presence.
