Minot Air Force Base, Military air base in Ward County, United States
Minot Air Force Base is a military air base in Ward County, United States, spreading across wide stretches of North Dakota prairie. The installation houses aircraft hangars, residential quarters, administrative buildings, and extensive security zones surrounding the runways.
The base began operations in January 1957 and initially served air defense missions before transferring to Strategic Air Command in the early 1960s. This shift made it one of the principal sites for nuclear deterrence during the Cold War.
The facility takes its name from the nearby city of Minot and remains largely inaccessible to civilians, as military housing and infrastructure occupy most of the grounds. Families of stationed personnel shape daily life in this enclosed community, which maintains its own schools and supply facilities.
Access is subject to strict security controls, and only authorized personnel can enter the grounds, making spontaneous visits impossible. The location far from major cities means a car is necessary to reach the base from outside areas.
Aircraft and underground missile silos operate side by side here, a rare combination found at only a few locations in the United States. The missiles sit scattered across hundreds of square kilometers of surrounding farmland, often far beyond the actual base perimeter.
