Jackson Heights, Multicultural neighborhood in Queens, United States

Jackson Heights is a residential neighborhood in Queens with apartment blocks, wide avenues and public green spaces. Between the streets you find small parks and tree-lined paths that soften the urban space.

The area was designed in the 1920s following the model of European garden cities, aiming to combine housing with ample greenery. In the following decades people from different world regions moved here, gradually transforming the neighborhood.

The name recalls John C. Jackson, a real estate developer who invested here in the early 20th century. Today you see shops along the streets with signs in Hindi, Spanish, Thai and other languages, used daily by residents for shopping and conversation.

Several subway lines connect the neighborhood to Manhattan and other parts of the city, with stations located along the main streets. Walking is the best way to explore the area and discover the many small shops and restaurants along the streets.

Many of the older apartment buildings feature shared interior courtyards accessible only to residents. These private gardens were designed following European models and offer quiet retreats in the middle of the city.
