West Point, town in King William County, Virginia
West Point is a small town in King William County situated where the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers meet. It features brick buildings dating back to the 1800s and early 1900s, small shops and cafes along the main street, and a riverwalk running alongside the water.
The area was originally home to the Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes living in a settlement called Cinquoteck. In the 17th century English settlers arrived, and by 1691 the town was officially recognized as a port where ships could trade and anchor.
The name West Point comes from Thomas West, a colonial governor whose family shaped the region. Today you can see this connection in the old buildings and the historical markers scattered through town.
The town is easy to walk around, and the riverwalk area is ideal for strolling or picnicking by the water. There is a play park for children, a beach area on the York River, spots for boating and fishing, so visitors can choose activities based on their interests.
The annual Crab Carnival held each October celebrates the seafaring tradition and features fresh crabs and seafood caught locally. The festival brings the community together with music, food, and games, reflecting the local connection to the river and its resources.
