WPIX, Television station in Midtown Manhattan, United States
WPIX is a television station in the Daily News Building on East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, broadcasting local news, entertainment programs, and sports content for New York City. The offices and studios sit inside this Art Deco building, which also houses production facilities and technical equipment for transmission.
The station began broadcasting on June 15, 1948, becoming the fifth television station in the city. The name derives from the New York Daily News, which originally owned the station.
Broadcasting includes worship services and special holiday programming, among them Midnight Mass and the burning log. These yearly recurring broadcasts connect viewers with city rituals across generations.
Broadcasts start early in the morning and continue late into the night. The signal reaches households across the city and surrounding areas through antenna, cable, and digital platforms.
The transmission facilities on the World Trade Center were destroyed on September 11, 2001. Despite the loss, the station continued reporting on events using its helicopter equipment.
