University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Public university in North Dartmouth, United States
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is a public university in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The campus sits between the cities of New Bedford and Fall River and provides space for lecture halls, dormitories, sports facilities, and research centers.
The institution began in 1895 as a technical training school and became part of the University of Massachusetts system after several name changes and expansions. The merger followed decades as an independent regional institution.
The campus buildings date from the 1960s and follow the brutalist architectural style with exposed concrete and clean geometric shapes. Students move between the low, sprawling structures connected by open courtyards and covered walkways.
The campus is accessible via several access roads and has visitor parking near the main buildings. Most facilities are on ground level or accessible by elevator, making the grounds easy to explore on foot.
The campus was designed by architect Paul Rudolph, known for his uncompromising interpretation of concrete construction. The complex is now considered one of the most complete examples of brutalist university architecture in North America.
