Bulfinch Triangle Historic District, Historic district in West End, Boston, United States.
Bulfinch Triangle Historic District is a neighborhood with 59 brick and stone buildings standing five to six stories tall, showcasing Renaissance Revival and Beaux Arts architectural details. The street layout centers on Canal Street, which displays the majority of these stylistic elements throughout its length.
Charles Bulfinch designed the street layout in 1807 on reclaimed land from North Cove, transforming what was once underwater into a developed urban area. The district later became a manufacturing and trade center, which shaped its architectural character.
The neighborhood grew into a furniture trading center during the late 1800s, with production spaces and retail showrooms sharing the same buildings. This blend of manufacturing and commerce shaped how people used and still experience the streets today.
The district sits between TD Garden, Government Center, and the North End, with Canal Street, Merrimac Street, and Causeway Street connecting the area. These central streets make it easy to walk through and connect to nearby neighborhoods and attractions.
The Paine Furniture Company building at 48-72 Canal Street displays Second Empire architecture designed by Gridley J. F. Bryant in 1871. This remarkable structure shows just how important furniture makers were to the neighborhood's past.
