Church of the Holy Cross, Gothic Episcopal church in Troy, United States
Church of the Holy Cross is a Gothic building designed by architects Alexander Jackson Davis and Richard Upjohn at the corner of Eighth and Grand Streets in Troy. The structure consists of a nave completed in 1844 and a chancel added in 1848.
Mary Warren founded this church in the early 1840s, with her son Nathan overseeing construction work. The main building section was completed in 1844, while the chancel was added several years later.
The choir established one of the first comprehensive choral services in an American Episcopal church. This musical practice shaped how worship was performed in similar churches across the country.
The adjoining Mary Warren Free Institute, built in 1863, provides religious and musical education programs. The corner location makes the site easy to find and accessible to visitors.
The altarpiece depicting the crucifixion was created specifically for this church by Robert W. Weir, a professor from West Point. This artwork represents a rare collaboration between a military academy and a place of worship.
