Green Island Bridge, Vertical-lift bridge in Troy, United States
Green Island Bridge is a road bridge with a vertical-lift mechanism that crosses the Hudson River between Green Island and Troy. It carries traffic across four lanes using a sophisticated hoist system that opens to let river traffic pass beneath.
After a railroad bridge collapsed during severe flooding in 1977, this bridge opened in 1981 to restore a vital crossing over the Hudson. The project responded to the flooding disaster that had destroyed earlier infrastructure.
The bridge is sometimes featured in local street art and murals that celebrate Troy's connection to the river and its industrial past.
Access is via New York Route 915B and the bridge can be raised for vessels to pass. Visitors can watch the lift system operate when water traffic needs to pass underneath.
It is the only vertical-lift bridge on the entire Hudson River and uses a dual-frame system for weight distribution. This engineering detail makes it technically remarkable among all regional river crossings.
