Galtür, Alpine municipality in Paznaun valley, Austria
Galtür is a municipality in the Paznaun valley in western Tyrol, located at an elevation of 1584 meters and surrounded by mountain peaks. The village spreads across a high plateau between the mountain ranges that form the valley.
The village suffered severe destruction during the Thirty Years' War, with many buildings and the church consumed by fire. The subsequent reconstruction shaped many structures that define the settlement's character today.
The residents come from three different backgrounds: Romansh people from Engadin, Walser from Vorarlberg, and Bavarian-Tyrolean settlers. This mixed heritage shapes local traditions and how the community lives together today.
The Silvapark ski area offers slopes for skiing and snowboarding with several mountain railways connecting different sections. The location serves as a starting point for hiking in summer months and tours into the surrounding mountains.
Physicist Albert Einstein and Nobel laureate Erwin Schrödinger visited the village in the past, drawn by its pure mountain air. Their stays connect the settlement to the scientific history of the 20th century.
