Vilsalpsee, Alpine lake in Tannheim Valley, Austria
Vilsalpsee sits at 1,165 meters elevation in the Tannheim Valley and is surrounded by the peaks of Gaishorn and Rauhorn. The water reflects the enclosing mountains in deep blue.
The eastern shore experienced multiple rockfalls between 2008 and 2013, prompting the construction of protective walls in 2015. These structures now stabilize the hiking trails against further events.
The lake is a protected nature reserve where rare water birds breed and over 700 plant species thrive. Visitors encounter this natural diversity while walking along the shore.
Access requires a four-kilometer walk from Tannheim since vehicle traffic is restricted between 10:00 and 17:00 to protect the natural surroundings. This approach keeps the visit peaceful and preserves the environment.
Two restaurants on the northern shore serve fresh fish dishes with trout and arctic char caught directly from the lake. The meals connect local traditions with enjoying the setting.
