Riesachfälle, Waterfall in Untertal Valley, Austria
Riesachfälle is a waterfall in Untertal Valley that drops across multiple tiers down a steep limestone face, totaling about 140 meters in height. The water tumbles through different sections as it flows down the rock formations, creating a series of cascades along its course.
The waterfall developed over thousands of years as the Riesachbach stream gradually carved through the limestone rock of the Eastern Alps. This slow process of water erosion shaped the steep canyon and cascading sections seen today.
Local communities maintain the hiking paths and viewing platforms around Riesachfälle, preserving access for nature enthusiasts from around the world.
A marked blue hiking trail leads from the parking area to the main viewpoint in roughly 20 minutes on foot. Sturdy shoes are advisable since the paths can be wet and slippery near the falling water.
The upper falls connect to Riesachsee lake above, forming a natural water system that supplies the cascades. Few visitors realize this lake-fed arrangement when viewing the waterfall from the lower trail.
