First Shaheed Minar, Language movement memorial in Rajshahi City Corporation, Bangladesh
First Shaheed Minar is a monument in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, built from white marble with steps and iron railings on its sides. Verses from Bengali poets are inscribed across its surfaces, connecting the structure directly to the language movement it commemorates.
Students built this memorial in 1952 after police opened fire on demonstrators demanding Bengali be recognized as an official language in East Pakistan. The killings that day strengthened the resolve of the wider independence movement that would later lead to the creation of Bangladesh.
Every February 21, people gather here to lay flowers and join ceremonies remembering those who died for the Bengali language cause. This date is now recognized as International Mother Language Day worldwide.
The memorial sits in a central part of Rajshahi and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city. Visiting in the morning tends to be quieter, giving you more time to read the inscriptions without crowds.
The design of this memorial has been replicated so often that versions of it now stand in cities across Bangladesh and in several other countries. The one in Rajshahi is considered the first of its kind, which is where the name 'First' in its title comes from.
