Char Bangla Temples

Char Bangla Temples is a complex of four separate Shiva temples in the Murshidabad-Jiaganj area of West Bengal. Each structure follows a do-chala architectural style and displays elaborate terracotta panels across its walls depicting scenes from mythology and local life.

Rani Bhabani of Natore commissioned this complex in 1760 during the time of Nawabi rule over Bengal. This era blended local artistic traditions with the religious patronage of powerful regional figures.

The four temples display terracotta work that tells stories of devotion and community life from the past. Visitors can observe how religious practice and daily activities were woven together in the artistic decoration of these structures.

The site is located in a rural area and is best visited during drier months when local access roads are more stable. Wear appropriate clothing and check local conditions before traveling, as facilities nearby are limited.

The Ganges River has shifted its course over the years and now flows near the temples, continuously threatening their structural stability. This natural change makes preservation of this ancient complex an urgent priority.
