Khushbagh, Garden and cemetery in Murshidabad-Jiaganj, India
Khushbagh is a garden and cemetery featuring Islamic architectural design in Murshidabad, with tombs arranged within an enclosed walled space. The grounds span several acres and contain burial monuments built in the style typical of Bengal's ruling class during the medieval period.
The cemetery was founded by Nawab Alivardi Khan and became the burial ground for more than 30 members of Bengal's ruling family. The site took on its current form following major political shifts in the 18th century that reshaped the region's power structure.
The cemetery served for generations as the burial ground for Bengal's ruling family and their close associates. You can see the different grave markers scattered across the garden that reflect the importance of those laid to rest here.
The site remains open to visitors year-round and is easily reached from the western bank of the Bhagirathi River. Arriving early in the day helps you experience the quieter atmosphere and see the structures with better natural light.
After a Nawab's death, his widow cultivated numerous rare flower varieties on the grounds for over a decade, transforming the cemetery into a flowering garden. This green space was maintained through one woman's dedication until she too was laid to rest there.
