Citadel of Liège, Military fortress on Saint Walburge hill in Liège, Belgium.
The fortress stands 111 meters above the Meuse valley, offering extensive views across Liège and the surrounding region from its strategic position.
Prince-Bishop Henri de Gueldre initiated the construction of the first citadel in 1255, establishing a fortified structure to protect the city of Liège.
The citadel slopes transform during the annual October illuminated tours, presenting light installations that highlight the architectural features of the fortress.
Visitors can access the site through multiple entry points, with guided tours available to explore the remaining fortification walls and World War memorial.
The fortress underwent a major transformation in the 1970s when portions were demolished to accommodate the Regional Hospital Center of the Citadel.
