Tumulus of Hottomont

The Tumulus of Hottomont is a cone-shaped earthen mound standing about 11.5 meters high and spanning 50 meters across, covered with vegetation and trees. The structure sits near an ancient trade route that once connected the region to distant markets.

The mound was built during the 2nd century as a burial place for Gallo-Roman inhabitants. It has been documented on maps since the late 1700s, marking its long recognition as a local landmark.

Archaeological excavations conducted in 1932 investigated local stories connecting the burial site to a general named Otto, though this link remains unproven.

The site is accessible from the village of Grand-Rosière-Hottomont, which sits nearby along a historic road. Walking or cycling are good ways to explore the area, as it lies in an open, flat landscape.

Excavations in the 1930s uncovered artifacts from Roman times, but also sparked local legends about a connection to a general from that era. The identity of whoever was buried here remains a mystery to this day.
