Dobrich Zoo, Zoological park in Dobrich, Bulgaria
Dobrich Zoo is a nature and animal conservation center on a large property with naturalistic enclosures housing around 350 animals from about 70 species. The facility is planted with various tree species and provides the animals with habitats that resemble their natural environments.
The current zoo was founded in 2003 by Swiss ecologist Barbara Gehring following concerns about animal welfare in the previous facility. This redesign introduced modern standards for animal care and naturalistic living spaces.
The zoo serves as a learning space where visitors understand wildlife conservation while observing European bison, Przewalski horses, and many regional species in their environment. The focus rests on developing respect for nature and its inhabitants.
The zoo grounds are accessible and visitors should note that opening hours vary by season. It helps to allow plenty of time and wear comfortable shoes to explore the entire facility.
Two brown bears named Berna and Kostadin share their enclosure with Australian wallabies, raccoons, llamas, and alpacas in open habitats. This unusual mix of European and exotic species makes the zoo experience particularly varied.
