Botanical garden, Balchik

The Botanical Garden in Balchik sits on a hillside overlooking the Black Sea coast, with collections arranged across multiple sloping terraces. The plants are grouped by type and origin, spread throughout the grounds in sections that descend down the slope.

Founded in 1955 as a research facility for a university, this site transformed from a former royal residence into a place for studying plants. The change from private property to public botanical institution happened during a period when many such gardens were being created across Eastern Europe.

The garden's name reflects its mission to gather and study plants from many climates and regions. You can see how different plant communities are arranged together, showing the connection between geography and botanical diversity.

The garden is open most days, with longer hours in warmer months and shorter hours in winter. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the site has significant slopes and requires steady climbing between terraces.

One of Europe's largest cactus collections is housed here, with specimens from deserts and dry regions worldwide. Many visitors overlook this specialized section, even though it ranks among the continent's most significant assemblies of such plants.
