Kaliakra, Nature reserve and fortress at Kaliakra cape, Bulgaria
Kaliakra is a cape on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast that combines a nature reserve and cultural site with steep cliffs and ancient ruins. The headland juts far out to sea and is topped by a medieval fortress whose remains scatter across the rocky terrain.
The area was settled in ancient times and later became a strategic defensive stronghold under different rulers. After centuries of use, the site was eventually abandoned and has remained preserved to this day.
The fortress ruins show how different peoples shaped this place with their own building styles and ways of life. You can still see traces of these different cultures in the stone structures today.
Visiting is best during daylight when trails are clearly visible and wildlife is active. Sturdy footwear is important since the ground is rocky and sometimes slippery.
The site is known for migrating birds resting here and dolphins visible in the waters offshore. These sightings happen especially during certain seasons when animals pass through on their migration routes.
