O Cebreiro

O Cebreiro is a mountain village at about 1330 meters elevation featuring traditional pallozas with stone walls and thatched roofs scattered across the slopes. These distinctive homes with their simple curved construction form the core settlement pattern of the parish.

The parish emerged in medieval times as a crucial rest stop along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. This strategic location on the path to Santiago de Compostela shaped its growth as a supply point for travelers journeying through the mountains.

The Sanctuary of Santa María la Real remains a center where visitors witness how the mountain community honors its religious heritage through daily practice. Local residents and pilgrims gather here to maintain the spiritual continuity that defines their lives.
